Gerlinde, the founder of 4WORK and Dubai’s “Good Living Expert,” would like to introduce you to Pauline, the Managing Director of Nordic Homeworx.
After living in the UAE and Middle East for many years, Swedish native Pauline turned a personal passion for wood flooring into a full-fledged business in 2006. Nordic Homeworx is a Dubai-based company specialising in the supply and installation of Kährs natural wood flooring from Sweden in the UAE and Middle East.
Q1: Why do people love wooden floors in their home?
Natural wood floors provide warmth and beauty to any home. They also add style and value to your property, are clean and easy to care for, comfortable to walk on, and are non-allergenic. Wood flooring creates an ambience that lasts a very long time – for generations, as we say – while always remaining a natural, safe and healthy choice of surface to live on.
Q2: Where did your personal inspiration for flooring come from?
In Sweden, wood flooring is the traditional choice of flooring in many family homes. So when I moved to Dubai, I naturally wanted wood flooring for my own house. I discovered Kährs and applied for the dealership for the UAE and GCC.
Q3: Can you tell us about engineered wood flooring?
Engineered wood flooring has been designed to be more climatically stable than solid wood flooring. Engineered wood floors from Kährs are constructed on a multi-layer principle that reduces the drain on nature’s resources, while increasing the lifespan of the wood floor.
Q4: How does an engineered floor differ from solid wood?
As previously mentioned, an engineered wood floor is constructed on the extremely stable multi-layered principle. A solid wood floor, on the other hand, warps and cracks easily. Since wood is a natural material that is affected by climatic changes, a wood floor moves with the seasons, meaning it swells in high humidity and shrinks in low humidity. Kährs’ multi-layered construction minimises this movement. It provides the correct balance between the layers – top, core, and back – and ensures the floor remains stable in all weather conditions. A Kährs multi-layered floor is up to 75% more stable than a solid wood floor.
Kährs engineered wood floors sand as if they were solid. The multi-layer construction uses hardwood down to the joint only, with fast-growing wood below, which means it can be refurbished in exactly the same way as a solid floor.
Q5: Can you tell us about the eco-friendly benefits?
Solid wood floors are an unnecessary drain on natural resources. Kährs engineered flooring is definitely more eco-friendly than solid wood flooring as they use fast-growing wood species such as pine for the core material, thereby using less of the valuable hardwood surface layer when compared to solid wood flooring. Kährs patented its parquet technology in 1941, and have since been using it in all their flooring.
Kährs only uses reliable suppliers that share their vision and commitment to quality and the environment, and the wood used comes almost entirely from Scandinavia and Europe, where new growth exceeds that which is harvested. More than 70% of the raw material grows less than 160 km from Kährs factory in Sweden.
Q6: What is the biggest concern from clients regarding installing parquet flooring?
Our clients primary concern is definitely how a natural wood floor will perform with the extreme humidity and climate changes that we experience throughout the seasons. Clients are also concerned about the installation, since installing a wood floor is often considered to be messy and a long, tedious process.
Since our wood floors come fully pre-finished from Kährs factory in Sweden, and are installed in a completely glue-less, floating manner on top of any existing tile or marble (or any other solid, leveled surface), the entire installation process is extremely quick and clean.
Q7: How do you support your customers during their decision-making process?
As a company with over 7 years of experience in the region, our Wood Flooring Specialists can aptly answer all of our clients’ questions. Refurbishing a home can be an overwhelming process, so when we visit a client in their home, we are able to recommend which area they should install a certain product with a certain finish.
Factors such as natural light and overall look and feel of the home play a big role in making the right selection of a wood floor. We use our expertise to guide our clients and make them feel at ease to make the decision that is right for their personal needs.
Q8: How do you support your clients who are making the choice of which parquet flooring suits them?
It is usually the color that the client wants first, and then we are able to guide and show them the various kinds of wood floor we have in that color range.
Q9: Can customers install wooden flooring in the kitchen?
Yes, for sure. All Kährs wood floors have been spill-tested for 24 hours.
Q10: What is your maintenance service after installation?
All clients are given a special cleaning kit along with a maintenance guide that assists them. We also give them anti-scratch felt pads that can be placed underneath chairs or other furniture. We also advise that clients use the Vorwerk Kobold Cleaning System. This is a German cleaning system that has the perfect VacuMop for the floors, enabling the client to vacuum and mop their floors at the same time. Using only a damp cloth, this is a safe and easy way to clean and protect your Kährs wood floor, and you will be guaranteed excellent results every time.
Q11: What is your lead time?
This depends on the product. We either have it in stock in our warehouse in Dubai (5.000 sqm) or we need to order it from Kährs warehouse in Sweden, which usually takes about 6-8 weeks.
Gerlinde’s experience: The installation of Kährs parquet flooring.
I chose Kährs parquet flooring to create a warm feeling that would spread throughout the entire home. I shopped around in various stores, but I just fell in love with the Kährs parquet because of its quality, craftsmanship and overall look and feel.
I decided to go for a waxed flooring rather than sealed, as this gave me a cozier and more natural finish. Given that it is neutral, it brought together every room in my home. Each room has a slightly different style, and all the furniture looks fantastic because of the beautiful parquet flooring.
When it came to the cleaning and to keeping it naturally beautiful, I opted for the Vorwerk Kobold VacuMop. The VacuMop vibrates slightly and therefore shakes up the dirt, dust and sand that easily gets stuck and damages wooden flooring. After a year of using the Kobold, the floor still looks amazing and no additional maintenance from Kährs’ side is necessary. It is the only cleaning system for wooden flooring that is on the market worldwide, and is very easy to use as it vacuums and mops at the same time. It can also be used for tiles and other hard flooring.
